Mary Ann Ciliberto

Mary Ann Ciliberto, 91, of the Old Boston section of Jenkins Twp., passed away Friday, May 24, 2024, at Scranton Healthcare Center, where she has resided for the past year.  Born in Pittston on March 26, 1933, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Nardone Ciliberto.

Most people remember Mary Ann as ‘Puba’, a nickname her father gave her, as she was the first girl born after three sons.  It means “doll” in Italian.

She was a graduate of Jenkins Township High School. Following high school, she began working in a dress factory. It was here that she made her career, working in Old Boston, then to the Lori Dress Company, in Pittston, and finally retiring from Leslie Faye.  She was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. Everyone in the family knew who to see to have a zipper fixed, pants hemmed, and a button reattached.

Puba was always doing for others. Though she had no children of her own, she treated her nieces and nephews like children. She truly did her best to look out for the whole family.

She took after her mother, and was a traditional Italian cook.  She was famous for many things, her pepper cookies, tiramisu, but her stuffed pumpkin flowers were always a favorite. Neighbors would harvest fresh pumpkin flowers and show up at the door so Puba could cook them as they waited.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Anthony and sister-in-law Isabel, brother Peter and sister-in-law Marie, and brother-in-law Thomas Warke.

Surviving are her brother Albert and wife Albina, Old Forge, sister, Patricia Warke, Sugar Notch, numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Scranton Health Care Center for their care of Mary Ann.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, May 31, 2024, at 9:30am in St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William Street, Pittston.  Those attending are asked to go directly to the church.  Interment, Denison Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, 251 William Street, Pittston.
