John “Sonny” Cascio, 103, of Pittston Township, passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Marywood Heights, Scranton. John was born on February 11, 1921, in Castelcivita, Salerno, Italy, the son of Carmine Cascio and Mariantonia Costantino Cascio.
John was a kind man with quiet strength and resilience shaped by years of hard work, determination, and unwavering devotion to his family.
After years of farming in Italy, John immigrated to America in 1955, transitioning to coal mining and construction. He took immense pride in his family and garden. Known locally for his homemade wine and old-world winemaking skills, John shared his passion by mentoring many aspiring wine enthusiasts.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Settimia Cascio, in 2003, his parents, and his brother, Nick Cascio, in 2021.
John is survived by his daughter, Maria Cascio Evers, of Pittston Township; his son, Carmine Cascio and wife Giovanna, of Italy; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Nicholas Evers (Kristal) of Clarks Summit, and their sons, Alexander and Henry; Giovanni Cascio (Morena Tancredi) of Italy, and their sons, Samuel and Matteo; and Marco Cascio (Valentina) of Canada, and their children, Luca and Martina. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Jean Cascio, of Pittston Township; his nephew, Carmen Cascio, of Pittston Township; his niece, Mary Grace Walkowiak (Gerard), of Wilkes-Barre; and numerous cousins, great-nephews, and great-nieces in both Italy and the U.S.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William Street, Pittston. Family and friends may pay their respects at the church from 8 a.m. until the start of the Mass.
Interment will be private.
