Gerald (Jerry) Callaio, 68, of Pittston passed away Thursday February 13, 2025 at his home.

Born in Pittston, he was the son of the late Gerald and Martha Callaio. Growing up he always loved science, geography and astronomy which continued throughout his adult life. He also loved all animals, especially the stray cats he “adopted”. Christmas was Jerry’s favorite holiday. He liked the music, decorating and setting up model trains with his niece, Christine.
After graduating Pittston Area High School, Jerry attended Penn State where he majored in Earth Science. His passions were classic rock, Star Trek and Penn State football.
Jerry started his nursing career as a CNA in State College where he cared for his favorite patient Joe Paterno's mother. He took pride in helping others, especially the elderly. When his niece, Tracie, attended Penn State he always looked out for her. She had many dinners with him enjoying some of his famous soup.
After moving to Sarasota with his lifelong partner, Tom, Jerry continued his nursing career. In the warm Florida climate, he enjoyed being outdoors: walking, biking and exercising. He also became an avid gardener and his landscaping was the envy of the neighborhood. He occasionally traveled north to visit friends and family. One of his fondest memories was going to Hershey Park while visiting his grandniece, Elise, and grandnephew, Ailey. He was so excited to win them stuffed animals on the midway.
Jerry always loved the Pittston community and followed his town’s happenings while in Florida. Upon retirement he moved back north to his hometown. Like his parents, he never drove a car and could be seen walking around the city. His sister, Geraldine, was always there to support him with a helping hand by providing rides for longer journeys. He continued to enjoy gardening, house projects and reading. Jerry regularly amazed everyone with interesting statistics, facts, trivia and clever sense of humor.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
Arrangements are entrusted to Adonizio Funeral Home, LLC, Pittston.
