Edward G. Groves, 72, of Laflin, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2016 in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Philadelphia on August 13, 1943, he was the son of the late Edward and Eleanor Brown Groves.
He was a graduate of Father Judge High School, Philadelphia and Villanova University. Mr. Groves also completed post graduate courses at Hofstra University.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of St. Vincent De Paul Kitchen, Wilkes-Barre where he volunteered in excess of 10 years, one of which he won volunteer of the year award. He was also a volunteer spokesperson for CARIE where he spoke to senior groups regarding Medicare fraud. He was a previous member of the Philadelphia Mummers Association and was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Phillies. He enjoyed traveling especially cruises and road trips. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin.
Mr. Groves was employed as a food broker having worked for Armour Grocery Products Co, Clifton, NJ; Bonstedt Coale Inc, Wayne, PA; Delbert Craig Company, Wilkes-Barre; Brown Del Grosso Morrison, Inc, Pittston; and JP Sales and Associates, Dresher. He also was employed as Personnel and Operations Manager for Hourigan, Kluger and Quinn, Wilkes-Barre.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Sally Barclay.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Rita Dougherty Groves and daughter, Beth Groves, Glen Mills.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 11:00am in St. Maria Goretti Church, 42 Redwood Drive, Laflin. The bereavement group will recite the rosary ½ hour prior to mass. The family will receive friends and relatives in the church from 9:00am until the time of service. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, 39 E. Jackson Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Peter J. Adonizio Funeral Home, 251 William Street, Pittston.
