Albert B. Melone, Sr., 97, of Stauffer Heights, Pittston Township, passed away Tuesday, afternoon, December 22, 2015.
Born and raised in the Oregon Section of Pittston, he was the son of the late Joseph and Grace Nardone Melone. He attended local schools in Pittston graduating high school from St. John the Evangelist in 1935 and then furthered his education by graduating in the year 1940 from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, University of Pennsylvania, Extension Division.
He pursued his career in accounting by working for various Adonizio Coal Operating Interests, concluding as Comptroller for the William Penn Colliery Co., Shenandoah, PA. He subsequently founded the accounting firm of Albert B. Melone Co., in 1954; which continues today under the partnership of his two sons, Albert Jr. and Thomas J. He was also a shareholder in a family owned corporation named Pro Data Processing Inc.
Mr. Melone was a Licensed Public Accountant within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and also a member of both the National Society of Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Society of Public Accounts since 1954. He was also an Enrolled Agent (60-EA) allowed to practice before the Department of the Treasury – Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Melone served as a former member of the board of directors of Pittston Hospital and the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, now St. Joseph Marello Parish, Pittston and a member of its Holy Name Society. He also served on the finance committee and co-chairman of the church renovation project. He was also a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, JFK Council #372, Pittston; a well as a former member and advocate of the Greater Pittston YMCA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dominick (D.W.) Melone, and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Melone.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Margaret O’Rourke Melone; two sons, Albert Melone Jr. and his wife, Aileen; and Thomas J. Melone and Marianne Devers; grandchildren, Albert Melone III and his wife Katherine; Sarah and her husband Andrew Fleming; Thomas (T.J.) Melone and Hannah Melone; great-grandchildren, Graeme Melone and Avery Fleming; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 9:30am in St. Joseph Marello Parish, 237 William Street, Pittston. Those attending are asked to go directly to the church on Monday morning. Interment, Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call Sunday, December 27, 2015 at the Peter J. Adonizio Funeral Home, 251 William Street, Pittston from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Center, Scranton; or to the Colleen Shea Foundation.
